Pre-Race Preparations–Chicago Marathon

So clearly my blogger status could be called into question when I post barely once a week in comparison to spectators who blogged daily going up to the Chicago Marathon!  Whatev’s.

Friday – The Expo:

I didn’t actually plan out my pre-race activities the way I’ve done in the past for marathons.  I did get a good amount of sleep, rested my legs (only ran on Thursday & Friday), and tried to remember to drink lots of water.  I took Friday off from work, and went to the Expo. I met my friend Anna there and we had some fun:

Well, I thought I had some ‘friend photos’ from the expo, but seems like it was just photos of me!

Saturday Lunch:

One thing to redeem blogger status – I attended a blogger lunch meetup!  We had a fun lunch at Flattop Grill. It was a lot of fun to meet some new faces – but mostly hanging out with people I’m reading about and talking to online!

Saturday Evening:

My friend Dave stayed over at our place on Saturday night to save a drive in from the ‘burbs.  It was good to catch up with him on Saturday evening, feast on pasta, and then head to bed somewhat early.

Stay tuned for race day!

Marathon Readiness Update

So last week I was doubting my readiness to run a strong Chicago Marathon in two weeks.  Not necessarily from not having completed my training, or from being sick, but because of potty issues.

Well, I’m happy to report that I’ve avoided the bathroom on my last 2 runs. Each over 10 miles.

This past week had me meeting with a whirlwind of healthcare providers. An acupuncturist, who’s helping me with stress & my lingering shoulder pain issues.  A chiropractor, who’d previously treated me for the shoulder issues.  (These shoulder issues cropped up again during training, as additional tenderness starting to appear on long runs over 10 miles. Nothing crazy, but looking to delay when they start, and to see about a permanent solution.) And on Friday afternoon, I saw another chiropractor, one who specializes in nutrition & athletes.

Talking with her was really helpful.  We went over my eating habits, and specifically focused on what I’m eating before my runs that might be impacting the need to go to the bathroom, even on short runs.

She had worked with my husband earlier this summer to help him improve his recovery from workouts & ability to increase his training load.  She’d recommended to him to eat more animal protein, advice he took and has improved his training & recovery.

Well, for me, it seems like the “more animal protein at dinner” (which is where the main modification ended up being) hasn’t been so good.  I mostly run in the mornings, and within a month or so after this change began having my issues.  Dr  recommended that I avoid animal protein at night (instead eating it more in the AM) and also to try drinking coffee before my runs.

Attempt #1:  Saturday AM Run with CES – We had a 12-miler on the books and I woke up at my normal (2 hrs before) to drink my coffee & eat breakfast.  Run proceeded well, without any bathroom breaks, although I did have a bit of a coffee stomachache.  Kind of like when you drink a lot of coffee on an empty stomach.  Because 2 slices of toast is not a filling breakfast, but is what I eat before my long runs.

This run was good, but I wanted to try again.  Mike, as well as some friends (Lilian! Bloggers!), were running in the Fort2Base Nautical 10 Miler on Sunday morning.  Guess who signed up less than 24 hours before the race? Smile

Attempt #2: Sunday AM Fort2Base Race (11.45 mi)

Another early morning, but this time I tried making the coffee a bit weaker to avoid the stomachache.  Overall success, and breakfast & coffee were eaten in the car.  I waited in line forever to use the port-a-potty before the race, but ended up doing very well.  Accel Gel was taken before the race, and also around mile 6 of the race.  More detailed race report to come.

So I still need to try a ‘regular’ weekday morning run, but I think I’ve found the formula!  Marathon hope has been restored – and I spent the ride home from the race today looking at what my projected finish times would be!

Lobster roll

So I’m happy to report another summer milestone checked off– lobster roll!

Mike and I ate at GT Fish & Oyster on Sunday evening, and it was light and delicious!

On Banana Bread

My goals for this weekend are overall to de-stress and go into the next few weeks (and the Fox Valley Marathon!) with calm and good sleep habits.  Clearly that hasn’t been happening for the past few weeks. I’ve been stressed, and this week hit a high with workplace stress, lots of wedding decisions, and lack of sleep.

So this weekend’s plan is to sleep, relax, get some running, yoga and a bike ride in, sleep, eat, catch up on some chores that I’ve been letting slide.

Saturday so far has been pretty relaxing. I woke up and decided to defer my run to a cooler Monday holiday – and later found out a friend will run with me on Monday! Score!  Catching up on things, being somewhat lazy in the thunderstorm, and making banana bread.

I actually decided on banana bread after deciding that I wanted to use some peanut flour I’d bought at Trader Joe’s earlier this year.  I did a recipe search on Daily Garnish’s blog site for recipes using Peanut Flour, and decided to also use up some bananas we’d frozen a while back. Currently this recipe is in the oven baking, and I hope it turns out well!

Once the banana bread is out of the oven and cooling, I’m off to yoga class!

What I do when I’m not Running

I’ve been on a reverse taper since the Illinois Marathon, and have been getting back into running again!  Here’s what I’ve been up to:

Physical Therapy  – learning the exercises to strengthen my legs & run without knee pain

Cycling – I went on a 12 mile bike ride on Sunday, and practiced some skills/drills (i.e. how to not grip both hands without losing my balance)… in preparation for a Duathlon that M & I signed up for! It’s on Sunday. I hope it doesn’t rain. Don't tell anyone smile

Gardening – Bought the plants for our balcony container garden for the summer!  I got some tomato plants (San Marzano & Brown Cherry), tomatillos (Salsa Verde, here we come!), Zucchini, Bell Peppers, and strawberries!  Garden holla! Who else is out there with an edible garden?

Cooking – We spent the weekend and made a Quinoa Tamale from the Mark Bittman site.  It was interesting… not quite like the tamales we get from the Chicago Tamale Man, but delicious.  I may be trying some other quinoa casseroles again…

Work – boo.  But catching up on some work that I had deferred in the last few weeks. Esp. since my boss is out on maternity leave and things are CRZY at work! Some of that is me starting to manage an employee, a temp for now, but either way a good experience in testing out management.

Swedish Fish – just cus I’m running less does NOT Mean I’m eating any fewer Swedish Fish! What would you expect?  I still love them, but have been trying to eat fewer since I’m putting in lower mileage.
